‘I know Antonio very well’ – Del Piero asked about Conte returning to Juventus

Alessandro Del Pierro has said that the possibility of Antonio Conte returning to Juventus is not worth discussing at the moment.

Reports over recent weeks have suggested that Tottenham have opened talks with Conte’s entourage over a new contract and that the North London club are ‘confident’ the Italian will commit his future to the club (The Athletic).

However, Italian publications have continued to insist that a return to Juventus next summer is on the cards for the 53-year-old.

The print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (28/10/22 as relayed by Sport Witness) stated last month that Conte is Juve’s number one target to replace Massimiliano Allegri at the end of the season.

The report remarked that the Tottenham head coach has a ‘very strong bond’ with the Old Lady and ‘would hardly say no’ to the job if it was offered to him.

However, Del Pierro has insisted that the return of Conte is the last thing on the minds of the Juve hierarchy at the moment.

The Old Lady legend told ESPN FC: “I think Juve has a lot of things to think and the last one they want to think, is the return of Conte. I know Antonio very well.

“Certain parts of the year, it’s going to be in January as well, probably, some controversial situations are going to happen. This is his way to manage the team. Either you like it or you don’t like it. It’s very demanding and straightforward.

“It happened last year with Tottenham that they managed and he managed to step back. His future in Italy, there’s not a lot of talking about that.”

Reading between the lines of Del Pierro’s statement, it seems like he is suggesting that there is little to no chance of Conte replacing Allegri at Juventus at the end of the season.

Despite the speculation emerging from Italy, I remain confident that Tottenham will do what it takes to tie the 53-year-old down to a new contract before the campaign restarts after the World Cup.
