‘I know how good he is’ – Jenas urges Man Utd to snap up Spurs defender

Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas has urged Manchester United to snap up Jan Vertonghen.

Vertonghen’s temporary contract extension has come to an end and will bring an end to an eight-year spell in North London, with Harry Kane already taking to Instagram to wish the former Ajax player best wishes with the next stage of his career.

The 33-year-old had earlier sent a major hint that he was on his way out of Tottenham by ‘liking’ a post on social media that thanked him for his services to the club and earlier this morning confirmed his departure on Instagram.

A move to either Italy or Spain is said to be on the cards for the former Ajax man, with multiple clubs said to be interested in landing him as a free agent (Calcio Mercato).

Jenas previously suggested that Manchester City should snap up the Belgian international as he would be an ideal cover for Aymeric Laporte.

Now the 37-year-old has claimed that the Spurs defender could be an attractive option for Manchester United to go for, and insisted that he would be able to build a formidable partnership with Harry Maguire.

Speaking to BBC 5 Live Sport (as relayed by Football.London), Jenas said: “I keep touting him around everywhere but I’m sorry, Jan Vertonghen on a free is the best free transfer centre half out there.

“If you can get Harry Maguire back on the right side and get an actual ball-playing centre-half as a left-sider, that little dynamic may change things for them as well and he’s free.

“They’ll know what they’re doing, they’ll have a plan but defensively they’re miles off it.

“I know how good he is. It baffles me when I see him in the stand every week because I know how good he this player is.

“I’ve played with him, I’ve watched him and on a free transfer, it just makes sense.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have to agree with Jenas that Vertonghen is still good enough to do a job for several of the top six sides. Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and United still have issues at the back and I believe the 33-year-old would improve all of their defences.

However, It would be quite difficult to digest watching him play for another Premier League side. I hope Vertonghen moves to a decent club in Italy where he is able to have a couple of good seasons under his belt and pick up a few trophies.
