‘I loved being at Spurs’ – PL player has fond memories of his days in North London

Matt Doherty has been speaking to the press upon rejoining Wolves and, when asked about his time at Tottenham Hotspur, insisted he has taken away fond memories and positive lessons.

The Irishman left Wolves for Spurs back in the summer of 2020 and amassed 71 appearances for the Lilywhites over the years, registering three goals and eight assists (Transfermarkt).

Be it through injury issues or lack of form, Doherty never quite found himself as the first-choice right-back at the North London club.

In January of this year, as Tottenham prepared for the arrival of Pedro Porro, Doherty was poised to join Atletico Madrid on loan until the end of the season.

However, in a bizarre twist of fate, Spurs had reached the maximum number of non-domestic loans for the season and made the decision to release Doherty on a free transfer instead.

Doherty would make just two La Liga appearances for Atletico (Transfermarkt) before being released this summer.

Matt Doherty loved his time at Spurs

The 31-year-old is now back at Wolves and looking to get back to playing regular football. When asked by Express and Star about his experience at Spurs, Doherty was nothing but positive.

He said: “I loved being at Spurs. I miss some of the relationships I have there – it was a great place to work with some great managers and great players.

“My three years away [from Wolves], in my mind, has been very successful. I’ve managed to meet new people, learn different things and different sides of the game.

“Obviously you want to, but you don’t have to play every single game to deem it successful.

“I wouldn’t change anything of my three years away, apart from the obvious of playing more. There’s not much I’d change, I really had a great time.”

Matt Doherty always seemed like a really good guy and someone that everyone in the squad appeared to get along well with.

He also showed signs of being a great player at times, but sadly he just never managed to consistently perform. Him being back at Wolves feels like the perfect move.
