‘I reckon this is a mistake’ – Pundit gives his take on Postecoglou’s future at Spurs

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin has said that Ange Postecoglou has made ‘radical’ changes to Tottenham since arriving at the club and insisted that the Australian deserves time to show what he can do.

The narrative around Postecoglou at Spurs has certainly changed on the back of Tottenham’s four straight losses to Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

The 58-year-old’s methods are beginning to be scrutinised, with even many Spurs fans starting to wonder if this approach would be successful in the Premier League.

Over the last few days, several pundits have come out in defence of Postecoglou, with the likes of Gary Neville and Roy Keane pointing out that he has given Tottenham their identity back and calling on the club to give him time (Sky Sports).

Postecoglou deserves more time at Tottenham

It is now the turn of Nevin to defend the Aussie coach, pointing out that despite the poor results of late, Tottenham are in a much better position compared to where they were last season.

The pundit told BBC Sport: “If Arsenal’s team look like a well-oiled engine, Spurs’ crankshaft has clearly recently fallen off. Everything is being picked apart now with Ange Postecoglou’s regime. The tactics, the recent awful run, Ange’s ever-angrier ripostes to interviewers and his unusual take on the importance of set pieces. Questions about his future are growing.

“I reckon this is a mistake. Yes, there has been a dip, it is Spurs after all, but he hasn’t had time to build a full squad that reflects his style. He has been brutally honest about this in the past week. Remember, they are still ahead of where they were last season and they haven’t had Harry Kane’s goals, which is astounding.”

“They have been among the most exciting and entertaining teams in the league to watch, which is absolutely core to the DNA of every Tottenham fan. They want and expect style and skill, not the dour precision tactics that they would argue Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho tried to provide.

‌”Spurs should stick by Ange and his radical methods. Radical changes don’t work overnight, even if they have been fast-tracked by the Aussie. Apart from anything else he has been an amazing breath of fresh air, with his interviews and attitudes. The Premier League needs his doses of reality now and again.”

I do not think even most of Postecoglou’s biggest critics are calling for him to be sacked.

There is no doubt that the Australian deserves time to turn this ship around but the reality is that we have regressed rather than progressed over recent months.

Sides across the Premier League becoming increasingly adept at exposing the weaknesses in Tottenham’s system.
