‘I said to everyone’ – Harry Kane praises young Spurs teammate for Palace performance

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane has been speaking to Football.London after the win against Crystal Palace, and he had plenty of praise for his young teammate Bryan Gil.

Gil joined Tottenham from Sevilla in the summer of 2021 for a fee reported to be in the region of £21.6m and with Erik Lamela heading in the opposite direction (Sky Sports).

It’s been a difficult period for the young Spaniard though, who has had to wait patiently for opportunities with the Spurs first team. Despite making 20 appearances for the North London club last season, the majority of those were bit-part cameos from the bench (Transfermarkt).

The winger spent the second half of last season on loan with La Liga side Valencia before returning to Spurs. It looked increasingly likely he would return to Valencia again this season (Mundo Deportivo 23/08/22 – as relayed by SportWitness).

That fell through when Spurs failed to find a replacement, though (Domingo Ortiz).

Gil has been biding his time since, and has just eight appearances to his name for Spurs this campaign (Transfermarkt), with most of those again coming from the bench.

He may have made a breakthrough after a brilliant display in the 4-0 win against Crystal Palace last night, where he provided a fine assist, too.

The performance pleased teammate Kane, who said: “I’m really happy for Bryan. He’s waited patiently for his chance, worked really hard on the training pitch. You’ve just got to the ready. I said to everyone, young or old, just be ready for your opportunity and Bryan was there today.

“He would have been a little bit disappointed after the last game but he came out and showed his quality. I’m delighted for him and I’m sure he’ll be ready for the next one.”

Hopefully, that performance is the start of something for Gil at Spurs now. He’s an incredibly talented young player who always puts a shift in whenever he comes on, and he’s been so patient too. He must have worked his way into Conte’s plans now, so let’s see what he can offer us for the rest of the season.
