‘I settled in quickly’ – Spurs man sees his loan move as ‘an important opportunity’

Djed Spence has said that he has settled in well at Genoa and admitted that he is keen on showcasing just what he can do on the pitch over the coming months.

Spence was seen as one of the best young talents in the Championship just 18 months ago but his career has stalled since then, with the youngster struggling to get opportunities at Spurs while his loan spell at Leeds ended prematurely last month.

The right-back now has a chance to start afresh in Serie A after joining Genoa on a loan deal, which includes an option to buy for £8.5m in the summer (Fabrizio Romano).

A couple of weeks ago, The Sun’s Martin Lipton said on The Spurs Show podcast that according to his information, the former Middlesbrough man has already played his final game for Spurs.

That prediction seems likely to materialise if Spence keeps up the impressive start he has made to life at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium, with the defender delivering three solid displays against Salernitana, Lecce and Empoli.

Djed Spence is happy with his loan move to Genoa

When asked about how he has found life at Genoa so far, the on-loan Tottenham man has now told Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness): “I knew they had already been looking for me last summer. Now, the right conditions were evidently there to close the operation.

“I’m satisfied. It’s an important opportunity. I hope that this can be the beginning of a long journey in a club that is growing. I found a nice team and a pleasant city. I settled in quickly.

“They supported me in everything. Everyone in the locker room has helped. There’s a nice atmosphere here. Soon I will start studying Italian. For now, I prefer to concentrate on football.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given the modest option to buy included in the loan deal, it seems pretty likely that Genoa will activate the option next summer unless things go quite poorly for the right-back.

The 23-year-old will know that he could put himself on the shop window and potentially attract interest from Premier League sides as early as next summer if he does well in Italy over the next few months.
