‘I still believe’ – Ange Postecoglou gives honest assessment of Tottenham’s survival chances

Ange Postecoglou has reacted to Tottenham’s win over Wolves and has revealed whether he expects his former club to stay in the Premier League.

The battle for survival looks set to go right down to the wire, with both Spurs and West Ham picking up wins on Saturday.

It was Tottenham’s first win in the league this calender year at Wolves, and the reaction of the players and Roberto De Zerbi at the full-time whistle showed just how big a result it was for the club.

The Lilywhites still have a lot of work to do to avoid going down for the first time in nearly 50 years, and their former manager has now reacted to the club’s current predicament.

Ange Postecoglou blames lack of stability for Tottenham’s problems

Postecoglou believes that Tottenham’s main issues are down to a lack of stability, given that the club have had three different managers this season.

The Australian suggested that getting their first win of 2026 on board on Saturday was crucial in terms of momentum as Roberto De Zerbi’s men try to pull off a great escape.

When asked about the significance of Tottenham’s win at the Molineux Stadium, Postecoglou told TNT Sports: “Look, it’s massive. Anyone who would have said that Tottenham would be in this position even two months ago, you’d think it would be crazy, because of the quality of the players they have in their squad, not just in their starting XI. They’ve had a lot of injuries, but it’s one of those things — momentum in sport, in football in particular — and they’ve had it going against them for a while.

“There’s been so much uncertainty. Three managers in a year is never good. Four managers, with me included, in the last 11 months. You need stability, but all those things don’t really matter, and I’m sure Roberto right now is only thinking about how he can get these players to reach a measure of their potential, which would be enough to win this game. That’s got to be his challenge.”

Postecoglou believes Spurs can stay up

Postecoglou admitted that the Tottenham squad are less used to navigating a relegation battle than the other teams just ahead of them in the table.

However, the 60-year-old wants to see the North Londoners stay in the Premier League, and he believes they have the tools to do so under De Zerbi.

When directly asked if Spurs can avoid relegation, he responded: “Look, I still believe they can. I know they’re dressing them well. I know the players very well, but it’s funny because it’s a club that’s not used to being in this position, and the other teams around them have been before — they’re fighting and they understand what it takes.

“To even get a point is something, so that’s the only thing. There’s a lot of uncertainty, but like I said, I think Roberto’s a fantastic manager, and I certainly hope they get themselves out of it.”
