‘I take my hat off to him’ – Pundit admits he was wrong about Spurs’ summer signing

Kevin Phillips has admitted that he did not think Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg would have anywhere near the impact he has had at Tottenham and raved about the midfielder’s performances so far this season.

Phillips was hardly the only pundit to question Tottenham’s capture of Hojbjerg, with the likes of ESPN FC’s Don Hutchison and former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp claiming that the former Southampton man was not an ambitious signing.

However, the 25-year-old has made a fantastic start to his career in North London and quickly seems to have established himself as a mainstay in Tottenham’s midfield.

Hojbjerg has not only shielded the back four fantastically but has also impressed with his ability on the ball while displaying tremendous leadership qualities.

Phillips admitted that he has been surprised by how well the midfielder has done since his move to Spurs.

The former Sunderland striker told Football Insider: “For me, that (Hojbjerg to Spurs) was a surprise signing. You do see it every now and then. I do not think I was the only one raised an eyebrow at that signing.

“Even Spurs supporters must have thought, ‘Who have we signed? What are we signing here? Are we really signing a player who will take us to the next level?’

“But credit to the player. I have watched him a lot this season and he is a quality midfielder.

“He surprised me so I take my hat off to him. You have to hold your hands up sometimes because you make judgements and you get it wrong. I certainly hold my hands up and say I have got it wrong.”
