‘I want to find an excuse’ – Conte blames the weather for Tottenham defeat

Antonio Conte has joked that the changing weather may have been the reason for Tottenham’s poor display against Brighton.

Spurs went into the game against the Seagulls having won six of their last seven matches in the Premier League. The Lilywhites had been rampant in front of goal over recent months, with their potent front three all in very good form.

However, the home side barely created any clear-cut opportunities throughout the 90 minutes yesterday as Graham Potter’s men frustrated them.

While Conte’s men went a little more direct in the second half, they still failed to test Robert Sanchez and the away side hit Tottenham with a sucker punch in the dying moments of the game to take away all three points.

Thankfully for Spurs, their North London rivals Arsenal also fell to a loss against Southampton, which means they keep their three-point lead intact.

Speaking after his side’s 1-0 loss, Conte said (via The Daily Express): “We started very slowly, in this type of game, a tactical game, you have to move the ball quickly, you have to try and find the right space and attack the goal.”

He then joked: “Today we did everything too slow, maybe the weather, spring, I want to find an excuse, but for sure it wasn’t a good game for us.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While there is no doubt that we have improved considerably both defensively and offensively under Conte, we still seem to lack a plan B when things are not going our way.

I expected us to press Brighton high up the pitch in the second half and put them under pressure but we were seemingly content playing a mid-block, which suggests that Conte is not comfortable changing his game plan.
