‘I want to hear Harry say it’ – Ferdinand urges Kane to lay his Spurs cards on the table

Rio Ferdinand has said that he wants Harry Kane to reveal what is more important to him – finishing as the top scorer in Premier League history or winning the biggest trophies.

The speculation over Kane’s future shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, particularly with the striker now having less than 18 months left to run on his contract (Transfermarkt).

The 29-year-old wrote his name into Spurs folklore on Sunday by overtaking Jimmy Greaves to become the top goalscorer in the club’s history, and the achievement has sparked an even fiercer debate regarding what the striker should do next.

Ferdinand believes that no matter what the England captain decides to do, he will go down as one of the best goalscorers in history.

The former Manchester United man said on his Vibe with Five podcast: “If he wants to win trophies I think he needs to leave Spurs and go to a team capable of winning – because I don’t see that happening at Spurs in the near future.

“No matter what happens he will go down as one of the best goal scorers this league has ever seen, no matter what. Because the guy just knows how to put the ball in the back of the net in so many different ways.”

Ferdinand pointed out that Kane has to decide whether it is more important for him to be a one-club man and break Alan Shearer’s record at Spurs or leave in search of major silverware.

He added: “We spoke about this before. I want to hear Harry say it. Would you be happy to finish your career with no trophies but as the highest goalscorer in the Premier League’s history? If he says yeah, then that’s it. Argument done. Whatever we say is irrelevant.

“He’s going to target what he wants to achieve. Now some players would go, ‘no, no. This is about the team. I want to win the league or win trophies or whatever, if I could do both then great’.

“But listen, it’s down to him. It’s horses for courses for certain individuals, everyone has their own desires. But now it’s time for Harry Kane to decide what that is.”

The 44-year-old said that he was in a similar boat to Kane when he was at Leeds United but chose to leave Elland Road in search of winning trophies.

He said: “What are you in the game for? Are you in the game to be a one-club man or to win trophies? Do Spurs look like a team capable of winning trophies? I don’t think so.

“They were a better team a couple of years ago. Leeds is a similar example, I was maybe a year or two younger but I was in a team at a Champions League semi-final, nearly won the league, but I thought I had a better chance elsewhere and I had the opportunity to go.

“I made a very quick decision to go and win trophies. Harry Kane is probably thinking about it and having those questions. They need answering soon. He’s 29 and you only have a small window of opportunity, they come and go very quickly.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This whole debate misses the point that no club that would be interested in Kane can offer him the guarantee of winning league titles. I understand why the striker was keen to join City 18 months ago as Guardiola’s men offered him that certainty.

However, if Liverpool’s substantial decline this season and Arsenal’s sudden rise prove anything, it is that it is difficult to predict the direction of certain projects.

The question for Kane is that can he really be sure that Man Utd under Ten Hag next season would offer him a much better chance of competing for trophies than Tottenham under Conte? I do not think he can be.
