‘I want to keep doing it’ – Spurs player hints he wants to remain at the club

Ben Davies has opened up about his emotional journey at Tottenham over the last nine years and admitted that he is determined to extend his journey at the club.

The Welshman has been a tremendous servant for the North Londoners since arriving from Swansea back in 2014  and has been valued highly by all the managers Spurs have had since then.

The 29-year-old has now worn the famous Lilywhites shirt over 300 times and he admitted that he is incredibly proud of reaching such a big milestone, given some of the other names in the 300 club.

Davies told Football.London: “It’s something that nobody will ever be able to take away from me. It’s that feeling of pride that I’ve given a lot to this club and I feel that I want to keep doing it and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

“Signing for Spurs was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. Being a young kid I’d never really been outside South Wales where I grew up.

“It’s one of those opportunities you take and you hope for the best, but it’s not easy to stay at a club like this for a long time. This club means a lot to me, it’s been my home for the past eight and a half years.”

Davies admitted that it is the passion of the Tottenham supporters that makes it particularly special to play for the club, and he reserved special praise for the travelling contingent.

He continued: “The fans have been incredible. The number of fans that follow this club makes it very special and the ones that stick with me are the ones that come away.

“It seems to be everywhere we go, we have a huge following and it’s so passionate. They’re always behind the team and it’s just a pleasure to play in front of them.”

The former Swansea man has once again demonstrated his reliability and versatility over the last few weeks by delivering solid displays as a left wing-back.

When asked about operating both as a centre-back and a wing-back this season, he said: “I think I can bring that reliability to a manager that knows that whatever position they put me in, I think I’ll be able to understand that role and play it as a manager wants.”

Finally, Davies also reminisced on the best moments of his journey at Spurs so far, including the final season at White Hart Lane and the big Champions League nights.

He said: “Your first game is very special and for me, it was an away game in Europe. It was a hot summer’s day in Cyprus and it was intense, but it was amazing to wear that Spurs badge for the first time.

“[The first goal], it was a cup game at White Hart Lane, Aston Villa, I think it was a 2-0 win but it was a good header.

“I think I’d even managed to score an own goal before then when the first one came it was a really nice feeling.

“I loved playing at White Hart Lane. The games there were always special and when we beat Manchester United and Arsenal in the last couple of games of the season.

“Playing in the last game at White Hart Lane was incredibly special and then we had a couple of great games at Wembley as well, a couple of Champions League, beat Real Madrid.

“That was a special season there and then obviously the games we’ve had at the new stadium.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Ben Davies has been one of my favourite Spurs players for a long time. He is obviously a very intelligent person and very much a team-man, who gives everything when he is out on the pitch.

Unfortunately, a section of Spurs fans made will never rate him as they made up their mind about him years ago and are not willing to change their opinion despite seeing contrary evidence.

The biggest compliment to the 29-year-old is the fact that Pochettino, Mourinho and Conte, who are all tactically quite different, were all willing to trust Davies and find a role for him in their sides.
