‘I want to leave Spurs’ – Player makes final transfer admission about his future

Steven Bergwijn has admitted he wants to leave Tottenham this summer in search of more regular game time.

The 24-year-old made 32 appearances last season but earned just four starts in the Premier League, with most of his minutes coming from the substitutes’ bench (Transfermarkt).

Antonio Conte has often praised Bergwijn and set his stance on keeping him at Spurs after his heroic late double in the win at Leicester (Mirror).

But he has still been the subject of heavy transfer interest from his native Netherlands with Ajax said to be pursuing the winger (Daily Mail), who joined Spurs from in a £27 million transfer from PSV Eindhoven in 2020 (BBC Sport).

And after netting for his country in their win in the UEFA Nations League opener against Belgium, Bergwijn has confirmed his desire to leave Tottenham to play regular football.

He said via Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad: “Have I talked to [Ajax coach] Alfred Schreuder about my future? I’m at the national team now and then we’ll have a look.

“It would be nice if there was clarity soon. I just have to go play, but I want to leave Spurs now, that’s for sure.

“Whether it is important that my new club plays in the Champions League? That’s not even top priority. Though it would be nice. What’s important is that I’m going to play.

“I wasn’t allowed to leave Spurs in the winter and then I didn’t have any problems. The last few months I was hardly looked after there. Now I want to play somewhere weekly.

“That could be [an option], yes, [a return to the Eredivisie]. It’s about my situation now, that has to be different.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is a shame that Bergwijn wants to leave as he can provide the team with plenty of depth up front, but you cannot blame him as he is never going to get the minutes he wants with who is ahead of him.

It does look all the more likely that he will move back to the Netherlands to Ajax as they continue to be the side to show the most interest.
