“I was devastated” – Harry Kane recalls his embarrassing moment in a Spurs shirt

Harry Kane has admitted that he still has not got over the mistake he made back in 2014 when he went in goal for Tottenham during a Europa League match against Asteras Tripolis.

Kane was making a great impression in Tottenham’s first season under Mauricio Pochettino and was starting to find the back of the net in the Europa League group stages.

The striker netted his first hat-trick for Spurs against Asteras Tripolis and then decided to don the gloves when Hugo Lloris received a late red card.

However, the striker endured a horrible moment as he allowed a free-kick to slip right through his hands soon after going in goal.

The goal did not matter too much since the North Londoners were already 5-0 up in the game at the time but the England captain has admitted that he had a hard time getting over his mistake as he quite fancied himself as a goalkeeper.

In an interview with NFL star JJ Watt on Sky Sports (as relayed by The Daily Star), Kane said: “I used to play [as goalkeeper] quite a bit when I was younger.

“Then early on in my career for Tottenham, I scored three goals, it was my first hat-trick for Tottenham, and then Hugo got sent off and we had no more subs.

“I’m straight in, my confidence is at an all-time high. I got put in goal for the free-kick. It was 80th minute or so, so I just wanted to keep a clean sheet.

“The guy has shot, you can probably find it on YouTube, I’ve gone to catch it and it’s just gone straight through my arm and into the net.

“I was devastated, I’d scored my first hat-trick for Tottenham and I’ve come off the pitch gutted because I’ve embarrassed myself in front of everyone.

“I fancy myself as a good keeper as well. The thing is with strikers and keepers, we are always giving each other stick.

“After that, I had to stay quiet for a while. I’m still waiting for the opportunity to go again.”

It shows the kind of competitor and perfectionist Kane is that he was gutted because of his mistake even though he had just netted his first senior hat-trick for Tottenham.
