‘I was gutted’ – Former Spurs winger thinks even Daniel Levy didn’t want him to leave

Aaron Lennon has opened up on his disappointment when it was finally time for him to say goodbye to Tottenham Hotspur after nearly a decade at the club.

Lennon arrived at Spurs as a teenager from Leeds back in 2005 and went on to make 364 appearances for the club over nine and a half seasons at White Hart Lane.

He was a fixture in some fantastic Tottenham sides under Martin Jol and Harry Redknapp, being part of the League Cup-winning side in 2008, which remains the last trophy that the club have won.

The pacy winger was the sort of exciting player that Spurs supporters loved to see, often getting fans out of their seats whenever he received the ball and ran at defenders.

Aaron Lennon was gutted to leave Tottenham

After being a regular starter for many years, the England international fell out of favour after Mauricio Pochettino arrived at the club in the summer of 2014 and was loaned to Everton in January 2015, with the deal being made permanently six months later.

When asked about his exit, Lennon told Off The Shelf Podcast: “No, I was gutted. I knew it was coming because I wasn’t playing much and I was out of the squad, but it was tough because I felt like I could play in that side.

“This club was like home then, I’d been at Leeds, but this became home. It was tough, I knew it was coming, but until it happens you don’t realise how hard it hits you, I remember I sat with Daniel and I think he didn’t want me to leave also, but even then we both knew it was right, I wasn’t playing and I needed to play.”

It is a shame how things ended for Lennon at Spurs, with the winger being part of the infamous bomb squad who were pushed out of the door by Pocehttino.

At his pomp, he was one of the most exciting players to watch, often being the man who made things happen whenever he got on the ball.
