‘I would have signed in blood’ – Guglielmo Vicario explains why he joined Spurs

It’s safe to say Guglielmo Vicario has made a big impact since joining Tottenham Hotspur and many fans are glad to have him. But for the man himself, signing for Spurs was something he simply had to make happen.

Signed from Serie A side Empoli for around £17.2m (TNT Sports), eyebrows were raised when Spurs opted to sign a relatively unknown Italian goalkeeper as their new number one, especially when Brentford’s David Raya was available.

Clearly, the Tottenham scouts knew what they were doing, as the arrival of Guglielmo Vicario is now regarded as a masterstroke from the North London club. Indeed, the 27-year-old has rapidly proven he is one of the best keepers in the Premier League.

With six clean sheets so far this season across all competitions (Transfermarkt), Vicario has established himself as a key member of the Spurs backline, as well as a formidable leadership figure in Ange Postecoglou‘s squad.

Guglielmo Vicario really wanted to join Spurs

Obviously, Spurs fans feel very lucky to have Vicario between the sticks, but it is Vicario who truly feels blessed to be at the club. Speaking to the Telegraph, the Italian stopper revealed how eager he was to ensure the transfer went through in the summer.

He said: “I said that I would have walked here if needed and signed in my own blood. It was my way of saying that it was an opportunity I couldn’t miss. So I was ready to come from Italy to the UK walking. Or running. And if I had no pen or anything, I would have signed in blood, cutting myself and signing with my own blood.”
