“I would like to have got Patrick Vieira and was genuinely keen on him”

Harry Redknapp has admitted that he would have liked to have brought Patrick Vieira to Tottenham before the close of the summer transfer window.

The Spurs boss is concerned about the shortage of central midfield players at the club and confirmed that he is likely to recall Jamie O’Hara from his loan move at Portsmouth in January.

“We are short in central midfield,” he said. “We have three central midfield players. [Jermaine] Jenas, [Tom] Huddlestone and [Wilson] Palacios. That is not enough. We have left ourselves short.

“Jamie O’Hara went on loan [to Portsmouth], and we sold Didier Zokora and [Kevin-Prince] Boateng,” Redknapp added before revealing O’Hara is likely to return. “Jamie is almost certainly coming back in January. I like Jamie as a person and player and we were not really mad keen to loan him but they [Portsmouth] were buying Boateng and they wanted to loan O’Hara. So it made it happen a bit.”

He added: “I would like to have got Patrick Vieira and was genuinely keen on him,” he said of the Internazionale and former Arsenal midfielder.

“It is the only area that scares me a bit. Luka Modric [currently out injured] can play there as well but, if we get injuries, we only have three and that’s not enough.”

  1. The only chant that I never join in with at White Hart Lane is: “Stand Up If You Hate Arse-nal”…to do so, would be to recognise an inferiority, to dignify Woolwich Wanderers with a cachet, a kudos they do not deserve; i.e. our attention.
Therefore, when thinking about France’s once-towering midfield general, Patrick Viera, I only see the quality of the player. In this day and age when club badges are so exchangeable, and loyalties so tradeable, his previous ‘allegiance’ to the Gooners seems hardly an issue. If memory recalls, Monsieur V was quite eager to leave the Library of Snores for a good while before he joined Juventus.
Having said all of this, I would not have signed Patrick Viera on purely footballing grounds. He is not the player he once was, and a club with ambition needs to make more signings like Modric, and now Krankjar, and less signings like Davids and Sherwood.

  2. concerned shortage of midfield… yea right..
niko, bentley, jj, dos santos, rose, bostock… for me deep
inside arry he will never give this lads a chance instead
bring in an ex gooner for the past year we hate most…
oh yeah o’hara was an ex also but never have a chance to hurt us..

this decision i doubt ur credibility arry

  3. Not to argue with the boss but what the hell is Kranjcar?
I count, JJ, Hud, Wilson, Modric, Kranj, Bentley, Santos, Bostock, livermore…….

Thinking this article is yet another fabrication from the peanut gallery……..

    must be a slow week!

  4. Fozz, azrin 84, you are missing the point. Yes we have enough midfielders, but do we do not have a tough tackling midfielder the likes of viera if palacios is injured. the players you are mentioned are not the type to go in with a crunching tackle and win the ball back, which is the type of player we have been missing for years. I don’t particularly want to see an ex gooner in our team but if it would strengthen the squad and help us get top four then I doubt I’d lose any sleep over it.
