Ian Wright outlines what could separate Spurs and Chelsea in top-four race

Tottenham’s dramatic late win at Villa Park yesterday has taken them to within a point of Chelsea, who welcome Manchester United to Stamford Bridge later this evening.

The win has put Spurs right in the thick of the race for fourth ahead of an all-important showdown with Chelsea next weekend.

Spurs found themselves 12 points adrift of the fourth spot when Jose Mourinho took over back in November but less than three months later, the gap is now within reach of being extinguished.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright believes the Lilywhites are now favourites to clinch Champions League qualification for a fifth straight season.

He claimed that Jose Mourinho’s vast experience could prove the difference between the two sides as we approach the business end of the campaign.

Wright suggested that Frank Lampard’s managerial inexperience could cost the Blues in the final run-in.

Speaking to the Kelly and Wrighty show (as posted by the Football Report), Wright said: “That’s why he is there [Mourinho to help Spurs finish in a CL place]. Of course, they can catch Chelsea.

“You are looking at Mourinho, and the experience he has got and he will be able to push Spurs into that situation and put that pressure on Chelsea., where Frank has less experience than him and he will have to see how they react to that.

“But yes, you can easily see Spurs finishing in the top four.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While we do seem to be picking up form at the right time, I am still not confident of finishing fourth as we seem incapable of playing well for the whole ninety minutes. We invariably seem to have shaky spells during matches and we haven’t completely sorted our defensive problems as of yet. However, the teams in and around us seem to be in worse shape than us currently, which is why we will probably sneak into fourth.
