‘Brilliant’ – Ian Wright praises moment from Spurs man at Aston Villa

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has praised Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr over his involvement in the opening goal against Aston Villa.

Tottenham headed to Villa Park on Sunday in what could prove to be a crucial fixture in the race for a top four Premier League finish with Ange Postecoglou’s side at risk of going eight points behind their opponents if they suffered a defeat.

Despite dominating the opening proceedings, Tottenham were unable to make their possession count and failed to register a shot on goal in the first half.

The visitors came out after the break and put in a remarkable 45 minute display to see Tottenham beat Aston Villa 4-0.

Pape Matar Sarr’s cross was of the highest quality

The first goal came as a result of Dejan Kulusevski linking up well with Pedro Porro before releasing Sarr down the right, who played an inch-perfect pass into the path of James Maddison, despite appearing to stumble prior to playing the cross.

Wright was full of admiration for the 21-year-old’s assist, claiming that his cross made it relatively easy for Maddison to break the deadlock.

Ian Wright praises Pape Matar Sarr

Wright said during his appearance on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football: “To the honest, the cross makes the finish. This is what I love about how James Maddison gets in there, look at James Maddison, he’s really moving now and this ball is making him stretch so all he has to do is get something on that.

“That ball scored that goal for him. It’s the kind of cross you want, you don’t have to do much apart from ensure you get good contact, brilliant cross.”

Further goals from Brennan Johnson, Heung-min Son and Timo Werner ensured all three points headed back to N17, with Spurs next in action at Fulham on Saturday evening.

Pape Matar Sarr continues to make others sit up and take notice with his remarkable growth over the course of the season. Thankfully he appears to be over the back injury he had at AFCON and can keep fit to help play a pivotal part in securing Champions League football.

The youngster is certainly one of the first names on the team sheet in Postecoglou’s first team squad at Tottenham which is testament to how he has taken his opportunity with both hands, which has left Oliver Skipp looking like he is going to struggle for any minutes.
