Ian Wright questions Antonio Conte’s tactics after Spurs slump to Brighton defeat

Ian Wright was left to question Antonio Conte’s tactics after Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Tottenham came into the game full of confidence having been prolific in front of goal in recent weeks which had seen them rise to fourth in the Premier League table at the expense of north London rivals Arsenal.

Supporters who made the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium witnessed a display devoid of any creativity with the Seagulls winning the battle in midfield which left Conte’s side short of options to break down their opponents.

Wright was far from impressed by what he witnessed from Tottenham, claiming they looked like the away side while also highlighting certain aspects of their gameplay, including their lack of pressing high up the pitch and Harry Kane failing to drop deep to create opportunities behind the Brighton defence.

Spurs can consider themselves somewhat fortunate after Arsenal failed to capitalise on Tottenham’s late loss, having suffered defeat on the south coast at the hands of Southampton later in the afternoon.

Wright told Premier League Productions (16/4/22 – 14:57): “I can’t understand the tactics today, they played like an away side.

“They weren’t passing through the lines, Harry Kane wasn’t coming short, they weren’t pressing Brighton high to win the ball in the last third, to win the ball in those high areas to then attack them and it was very confusing when you consider what they’ve done leading into this game.

“But Brighton showed that little bit of class in the end and they won the game.”

Wright is completely spot on with his assessment, Tottenham looked a shadow of their recent selves in what was arguably their worst performance since the loss to Wolves in February.

They need to show a significant improvement next weekend when they face Brentford if they are to have any hope of a return to the Champions League.
