‘Icing on the cake’ – Journalist comments on whether Spurs could look at Memphis Depay

The Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur could turn their attention to Memphis Depay later in the transfer window once they have completed their key signings.

Depay enjoyed a decent first season at Barcelona, with 12 goals to his name in La Liga during 2021/22 (Transfermakrt) but the forward fell down Xavi Hernandez’s pecking order in the final few months of the campaign.

Spanish publication Sport reported on Monday that Spurs had enquired about the former Manchester United man during their negotiations with Barcelona over Clement Lenglet.

The report stated that even though the Netherlands international wanted to stay at the Camp Nou, he accepts that he will be sold this summer if a suitable offer came Barca’s way.

Jijantes FC reporter Gerard Romero claimed on Wednesday that should Ousmane Dembele stay at Barcelona, the Catalan giants would be willing to cash in on Depay for around €20m-€25m (£17.1m-£21.4m).

Mokbel has now remarked that Depay is not a name that Tottenham are focused on at the moment but the journalist refused to rule out a move from Antonio Conte’s men for the striker later in the window.

When asked about Spurs’ pursuit of the Barca star, he said on the Last Word On Spurs YouTube channel (via HITC): “I think Tottenham and Conte have bigger priorities at the moment, a left-sided centre-back is imperative, a right wing-back is absolutely imperative.

“Getting deals for those two players will be the priority and maybe if there’s money to spend at the end of the window and Depay is available, that could be the icing on the cake for Tottenham’s window for sure.”

After getting Richarlison, Conte now has five decent forwards at his disposal. The only way I see Spurs making another attacking addition this summer is if Lucas Moura leaves, which looks unlikely. Besides, I do not think Depay will be keen to swap the Barca bench for the Tottenham one.
