‘I’d be shocked’ – Ex-Arsenal star makes big Conte and Spurs trophy claim

Paul Merson has backed Antonio Conte to deliver silverware at Tottenham and would be shocked if he does not manage to break the club’s trophy drought.

Tottenham sent out a message to the Premier League by appointing the 52-year-old at the start of November in place of Nuno Espirito Santo.

Arriving in North London on the back of winning Serie A with Inter Milan last term, the hope will be that Conte could reverse Spurs’ fortunes on the trophy front.

Spurs have not won a major trophy since beating Chelsea in the League Cup final in 2008, while the following years have been littered with various semi-final and final appearances.

Despite Conte’s typically short tenure length at previous employers, former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes the Italian can bring Spurs a trophy within the next two years, and would be left surprised if he fails to do so.

In his column for the Daily Star, he wrote: “Tottenham are going to win trophies with Antonio Conte. They have finally found the right manager.

“I’d be shocked if they don’t win any silverware in the next two years with him in charge because you can see it’s starting to click for them.”

Conte was the prime option on the market for Spurs and is the best man to end the club’s long wait for a trophy. He doesn’t stick around at clubs for too long but with the right resources and dedication, there’s no reason why he can’t deliver a trophy in the near future.
