“I’d have a cigar” – Former Arsenal star claims he’d easily deal with Kane

Former Arsenal defender Tony Adams has claimed that he would relish the prospect of playing against Harry Kane, suggesting that he would find it easy to deal with the challenge of the Tottenham Hotspur forward.

Kane headed into the World Cup in impressive form, having scored 13 goals in 22 appearances in all competitions at club level (transfermarkt).

He is yet to open to account in Qatar following the matches against Iran and the USA, and will be hoping to find the back of the net in this evening’s final fixture in Group B against rivals Wales.

Adams believes that Kane’s style of not running in behind with his preference to drop deep to attempt to influence play making it an easy task for central defenders.

He told The Sun: “HONESTLY, if I was a defender at this World Cup I would absolutely love playing against Harry Kane. He doesn’t get in behind the defence and he doesn’t face you up. He’s a link player who is going deeper and deeper to get the ball.

“People probably feel I’ve got it in for Harry after I also said we should take the captaincy off him and give it to Declan Rice. But that isn’t the case at all.

“And it’s not an Arsenal-Spurs thing either. We need Harry Kane, he is obviously one of the best strikers in the World, you only have to look at his numbers, but if I was a centre-back up against him in Qatar I’d have a cigar on.

“What I always feared was forwards with pace who could get in the spaces behind and force me to chase them. That scared the living daylights out of me, I hated it, but Kane doesn’t do that. And if he was running at me I’d be able to deal with that because he’s not going to have the pace to get round me.”

Adams was an old-fashioned central defender who relished a physical battle with an opponent, in reality, Kane’s all-round ability would have caused him plenty of problems with the likes of Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski running in behind while he orchestrates play.
