‘If I am honest’ – Jack Wilshere makes statement on Harry Kane

Jack Wilshere believes that the European Championship is the perfect stage for Harry Kane to demonstrate that he deserves to be in the same category as greats such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Kane goes in the tournament in supreme form, having won both the Golden Boot and Playmaker award in the Premier League last season despite playing in a struggling Tottenham side.

However, despite playing a part in England’s successful start to the Euros campaign, the 27-year-old did not look at his sharpest against Croatia before eventually being withdrawn in the latter stages by Gareth Southgate.

Some pundits have since suggested that Kane does not have an undroppable status in the England side like he did in previous years.

However, Wilshere has backed the Tottenham man to deliver at the tournament and has insisted that his experience will be crucial for the Three Lions in the latter stages.

When asked about Kane, the former Arsenal midfielder told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport: “I do think (he’s a different player from five years ago). He was still one of the first names on the teamsheet five years ago.

“But I think he has grown as a player. He has improved his game a lot. But as a leader as well, which will be key in this team because as I said there’s not that much experience in this team and to have someone with his ability and name in the game.

“I think this is his tournament if I am honest. He’s going to be looking at the other strikers and thinking ‘why cannot he go and score all those goals’.

“We have heard him speak recently, with Gary Neville, he said that he wants to get to the levels of Messi and Ronaldo. And this is where you get to them levels.”
