‘I’m certain’ – Michael Owen makes confident CL assertion about Tottenham

Michael Owen has revealed that he would not be surprised if Tottenham go as far as the semi-final stage of the Champions League this season.

Spurs got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start on Tuesday as they overcame Marseille 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after the Ligue 1 club had a man sent off at the start of the second half.

Both of Tottenham’s goals were scored by Richarlison, who has now forced himself into Antonio Conte’s starting eleven. Spurs have a relatively simple group on paper, with Eintracht Frankfurt and Sporting Lisbon being the other two teams who make up Group D.

Owen is ‘certain’ that the Lilywhites will qualify for the knockout stages, given their firepower in the forward areas.

Conte does not have a good managerial record in the Champions League but the former Liverpool striker believes his side have all the ingredients to go deep into the competition this season.

He told  BT Sport’s Champions League Tonight: “That’s a decent forward line now at Tottenham. They’ve got a great mix, I think they could go far in this competition.”

“I’m certain they will get to the knockout stages. I wouldn’t be surprised if they got to a semi-final. They’re a very good team, they’re a lot better than they were last year, they’ve got a great team, great stadium, great players – that team is going places.”

Our counter-attacking approach is well suited to the knockout stages of the Champions League. Real Madrid won the tournament with a very similar style of play last season.

However, given the quality of the sides in the tournament, it only takes a bad 20-minute spell in the knockout stages to be sent packing home.
