‘I’m not an idiot’ – Mourinho says that he knows player is not at his best

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Christian Eriksen, has under six months remaining on his current contract in North London, raising questions over his long-term future.

There are no reports that indicate that the Great Dane will sign a new deal with Tottenham, with the decision being whether to leave in January or for a free in the summer.

Eriksen can now talk to non-English clubs about a pre-contract agreement ahead of a free transfer come the end of the season. It has been reported that Inter Milan are interested in taking the playmaker (Sky Sports).

However, despite the uncertainty of his future, Eriksen is still playing a big role for Spurs under Jose Mourinho, starting against Liverpool in the Premier League days ago.

It was rumoured by some publications that the Danish midfielder was seen perhaps waving goodbye to fans at the end of the game (TalkSport), but Mourinho claimed today that the player would likely start against Middlesbrough at home tomorrow.

He also claimed that he is well aware that he does not have the best version of Eriksen at this moment (Alasdair Gold): “If you ask me if this is the best Christian Eriksen, I have to be honest and say no. I’m not an idiot, I’ve been in football for many years. A player who is in this position, it’s normal that a player in this situation doesn’t perform at the highest level.”
