‘I’m not going to let this club rest’ – Postecoglou wants Spurs to fight for the title next season

Ange Postecoglou has declared that he wants Tottenham Hotspur to be battling it out for the Premier League title this time next year.

It is fair to say that some of the overwhelming optimism we saw surrounding this new era at Spurs earlier this season has now cooled, with some of the team’s recent displays showing that there is still a lot of work to be done.

Tottenham’s display at the London Stadium on Tuesday was another stark reminder of how far the Lilywhites lag behind the best sides in the Premier League, with the away side struggling to break down the Hammers and fashion opportunities.

Postecoglou wants Spurs to challenge for the title

However, Postecoglou is certainly not setting any limits on what Tottenham can achieve, insisting that he wants his side to compete against the best next season.

When asked if Spurs can be in a title race this time next year, he told The Standard: “I hope so, or why am I doing what I’m doing? That’s why I came to the club. As somebody said to me last week, ‘Just do your job, Ange’.

“And my job is to try to bring success – and if you don’t think you’re going to be in the title race in 12 months’ time, then I don’t know why I’m here.”

Spurs are looking to chase down Aston Villa for the fourth spot this season but Postecoglou declared that Champions League qualification alone is no guarantee of progress next season, insisting that club need to kick on and pursue bigger and better things.

He added: “It’d probably make my life easier if I said, ‘Let’s make the Champions League’ because everyone thinks I’ve done a great job.

“But I look at the teams who made the Champions League this year from last year and that wasn’t the catalyst for them kicking on. I’m not going to let this club rest on where we finish this year.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is certainly a sense that teams around the Premier League are learning how to combat Postecoglou’s system and some might feel that the Australian perhaps has to adapt and make some tweaks.

However, adding a couple of more top-class players to the squad in the summer could potentially make a huge difference and take us to the next level.
