‘I’m seeing improvement’ – Conte’s silver lining amidst Spurs inconsistency

Antonio Conte has admitted Tottenham need to improve and become more consistent after seeing his side fall to a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, although he is seeing improvements from the squad.

Spurs were undone by a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo despite clawing United back twice in Saturday evening’s encounter at Old Trafford.

The defeat means Spurs have now continued their bizarre win-loss-win-loss run of games since the turn of the year which has hindered their pursuit of qualifying for the Champions League.

Although Conte believes his side is making a marked improvement, he feels there is still plenty of work to be done to bring a string of positive results down the line.

He said (via Football.London): “I’m the first to say that if we want to be competitive and improve your level, you have to work a lot. We are up and down. In the last five games, we scored three goals at [Manchester] City.

“The team is improving and scoring a lot of goals. At the same time, we have to use experience and manage the game.

“I have to try to change this situation by working a lot. This situation doesn’t come from now but it came from a long period to see up and down, up and down. We have to continue to work and try to give continuity to make more experience to manage the game.

“For example, we have equalised and after one minute we conceded the second goal. I want to push my players. Our ambition has to be to stay close to the top four. We are working hard and I’m seeing improvement.

“It’s frustrating because this is a match when we deserved more.”

Tottenham will look to shake off their disappointment when they are next in action, with a trip to Brighton on Wednesday.

The Seagulls have hit a rough spell of form themselves having tasted victory in the Premier League once in their last nine games.

The performance was good at points, but it was a case of silly mistakes at crucial times that was Tottenham’s undoing.

Conte has a job on his hands to bring an end to this fluctuating spell of form, especially now that a top-four place is falling away.
