‘I’m sorry’ – Postecoglou admits Spurs will continue to score or concede late goals

Ange Postecoglou has been speaking to the press in advance of his side’s game against Brighton and Hove Albion tomorrow, and was quizzed about the bad habit his team appear to have of conceding late goals. Typically, Postecoglou insisted he is not about to change his methods.

In Spurs‘ most recent game, the Premier League clash against Everton at Goodison Park, the Lilywhites appeared to be in control of the game with the score at 2-1 going into the final stages of the match.

However, Richarlison‘s impressive brace was eventually cancelled out by a Jarrad Branthwaite header deep into injury time, thus rescuing a point for the Toffees and leaving Spurs outside the top four once more.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side have been criticised as a result, for their seeming inability to change their approach and shut out a game late on.

Postecoglou not concerned by late goals

However, when the topic of Spurs conceding late on in games was brought up in Postecoglou’s latest press conference (via Football.London), the Spurs boss remained steadfast in his belief that his system will bring results regardless of when goals are conceded.

He said: “It’s disappointing to concede goals at any point. People will want to analyse it. I’m sorry but we’re going to be a team that will score or concede goals late.

“The way we want to close out games is by trying to scoring goals late on. One thing we’re not going to do is jump at shadows and try to fix the latest thing being analysed.”

I almost completely agree with Postecoglou here, and I will always be keen to get behind a manager and a team that want to attack and play exciting football.

However, there is something to be said for compromising that every now and again, to employ a bit of game management in a tight game. I think we should have shut Everton down more last weekend, but on the whole, he’s right to stick to his guns.
