‘I’m still rocking’ – Paul Merson left bemused by pundit’s Harry Kane claim

Paul Merson was left baffled by Lee Hendrie after the former Aston Villa midfielder claimed that he would pick Erling Haaland over Harry Kane ‘any day’ if he had a choice between the two strikers.

There has been plenty of speculation over Kane’s future over recent weeks, with Manchester City rumoured to be one of the clubs pursuing the Tottenham star as they seek to sign a replacement for Sergio Aguero.

However, The Telegraph have reported that Spurs have no intention of letting the talismanic striker leave, with the club’s hierarchy determined to hold on the 27-year-old for at least one more season.

Haaland’s reputation has blossomed due to the striker’s brilliant displays for Borussia Dortmund, with the Norwegian now considered by many to be one of the best young talents in European football.

Haaland has been linked with a move to the Premier League at the end of the season and Hendrie urged the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool to snap up the Dortmund star.

He told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (02/03/21 at 8:05 pm): “If one of the Premier League clubs don’t buy him for next season then I would be baffled.

“He is something special, I tell you that now. For the work he does off the ball as well.”

Merson then asked his ex-teammate: “Who would you take him or Kane?”, to which Hendrie responded: “I would go with Haaland, all day.”

Merson dismissed the former Villa man’s claim, insisting that Kane would be a much more valuable addition since he has proven to be a consistent world-class performer in the Premier League.

The former Arsenal man said: “All what? All what? I’m still rocking. All day. Naaah.

“For me, Harry Kane, wherever he goes in the Premier League, whether he goes to one of the big boys then he’s hitting the ground running. This is a hard league.

“You see Werner come over. He ripped it up the German league. He was brilliant. Havertz, he was brilliant. Scored loads of goals. They come over here and they cannot score goals. It takes time. But I think with Harry Kane, he gives you 30 goals. You are assured. Bang. Done!

“I like Haaland, don’t get me wrong but if you are saying to me ‘him or Harry Kane’ then Kane for me is an assured thing – But that all day one, I cannot have that.”

Putting Kane’s and Halland’s age aside, I believe if you offered Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp their pick between the two, both would certainly go for Kane. However, a deal for Halland would likely represent much better value for money given the fact that he will cost less than the Tottenham man and he potentially has over a decade of football left in him at the top level.
