‘I’m sure’ – Jonathan Woodgate makes claim about Conte contract renewal at Spurs

Jonathan Woodgate has backed Tottenham to extend Antonio Conte’s contract, insisting the North Londoners are not going to find a better manager than the Italian.

Spurs’ results over the last few months have been fairly inconsistent, which has seemingly frustrated Conte, who has seemingly hinted at the idea of walking away from the club (Football.London).

However, the Italian has changed his tune over recent weeks, insisting that he is starting to see improvements in the side (Football.London).

Conte is only contracted to Tottenham until the end of next season but the club reportedly have an option to extend his current deal (BBC Sport).

Reports have suggested that the chances of the Italian replacing Mauricio Pocehttino at Paris Saint-Germain cannot be ruled out (Daily Mail).

However, Woodgate is confident that Spurs will extend the 52-year-old’s contract as the club cannot afford to lose him. The former Tottenham defender also praised the North London club’s acquisition of Rodrigo Bentancur in January.

Woodgate told The Sunday Mirror (27/3; page 73): “Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp are a bit too similar. Bentancur looks stronger in that position.

“I didn’t know a lot about Kulusevski when he first came. But he’s got a floating role on the right-hand side and has done well. Spurs have to sign these types of players to really progress.

“Conte’s only got an 18-month contract, but I’m sure that’ll get renewed because Spurs aren’t going to get a better manager.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Conte will walk away from Spurs even if we fail to get into the top four.

Although the Italian has been frustrated by some results, he has also hinted that he is willing to be patient, given where Tottenham are in their cycle.

I also think that the Spurs hierarchy will do everything in their power to keep Conte as they seem fully invested in making the appointment work.
