Matt Doherty has spoken about his switch to Atletico Madrid and how advice from former Spurs and Atletico star Kieran Tripper helped him make the move to Spain.

In a bizarre twist on deadline day yesterday, Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the club had terminated the contract of Doherty to allow him to make the switch to Atletico Madrid.

With Pedro Porro arriving at Spurs, Antonio Conte found himself with a surplus of right wing-back options. Tottenham announced Djed Spence had left on loan to Stade Rennais, while Doherty was also expected to leave on loan, too.

The proposed loan move hit a snag though, as Spurs had already reached the limit of eight international loan deals for the season. With this in mind, the club took the decision to release Doherty on a free so he could join Atletico Madrid (Football.London).

On Trippier’s involvement in the move, Doherty said, as quoted by the Irish Examiner: “Just from what I’ve heard from people like Kieran Trippier, I’m very excited. With the way he said Simeone coaches and the players play, he said I’d really enjoy myself here.

“Kieran texted me yesterday. He was very reassuring about what to expect and put me in touch with the right people for places to live. He didn’t have to relay that message. It goes to show what type of person he is – a good guy.

“He didn’t need to tell me about training. I know that already. I’ve worked under Antonio Conte and it will be the same with Diego Simeone. That’s fine with me; you want to get into the best shape of your life. It’s the way to go.”

Kieran Trippier had a great time over at Atletico Madrid and there’s every chance Doherty could achieve similar results out there. He always seemed like a good presence within the squad and hopefully he enjoys himself in Spain.
