‘I’m very sorry’ – Son apologises to supporters ahead of Spurs return

Son Heung-min has apologised to South Korean football fans after the nation was knocked out of the Asian Cup by Jordan at the semi-final stage this evening.

With the way the tournament had shaped up, with the likes of Japan and Saudi Arabia being eliminated before the semi-finals, the Koreans would have sensed a golden opportunity to take the Asian Cup back to their country for the first time since 1960.

However, their wait will now go on for at least four more years, with Jordan booking their place in the final of the competition, with goals from Al-Ahli forward Yazan Al-Naimat and Montpellier winger Musa Al-Taamari seeing the West Asian side emerge 2-0 winners.

While the tournament has ended in heartbreak for Son, the silver lining for Spurs fans is that the 31-year-old will now jet back to London and is expected to be available for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Brighton.

Son could return for Brighton match

The Tottenham man was visibly distraught and apologised to the Korean fans for not being able to able to go all the way.

Son told Coupang Play (6/2/24 – 17:18) after the full-time whistle: “I don’t know what to say really. I am so sorry. The players did their best. I’m very sorry that the game is ended like this by mistake.

“The fans showed great support for us, I’m sorry as we couldn’t deliver as our fans expected, I’ll try harder so that national team to grow further in the future, again I’m very sorry.”

This comes as a bitter blow to Sonny, who might fear that this is his last opportunity to win a major piece of silverware with his country as he will be 35 when the next edition of the Asian Cup rolls around.

I am sure that the Tottenham players will get around the forward and he could do with a goal on Saturday to put this disappointment behind him.
