Impressed pundit gives three-word review of Spurs defender’s display vs Brighton

Jeff Stelling was blown away by the performance that Cristian Romero produced against Brighton on Saturday.

The fact that Cristian Stellini named an unchanged starting eleven against Brighton would not have gone down well with some Spurs fans, given the team’s abject display against Everton.

However, the Lilywhites did show plenty of fight on Saturday to take home all three points and keep themselves in the race for a top-four finish.

The home side were second best for large parts of the encounter, with the Seagulls dominating proceedings, and thus had to defend resolutely, especially in the second half.

Speaking after the game, Stellini praised the spirit that his players showed on Saturday, comparing the performance to their 1-0 win over Manchester City back in February (Football.London).

One man who showed plenty of fight as always was Romero, with the Argentine putting in a solid display to repel the waves of Brighton attacks that came through his side of the pitch.

Stellini was left mightily impressed with the centre-back and simply said about the 24-year-old’s performance on Sky Sports: “Romero- what a man!”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think this performance, like a few others this season, slightly punctured the popular narrative among some Spurs fans that the reason we struggle defensively is simply because we have bad defenders.

While there is no doubt that we need to make upgrades at the central defence, the larger problem has always been the system we employ and our lack of control, which means that we attract pressure onto ourselves.
