‘In a Spurs shirt soon’ – Pundit backs club to sign defender if Conte wants him

Kevin Campbell has claimed that Tottenham will push to sign Stefan de Vrij in January if Antonio Conte makes the defender a prime transfer target.

Recent reports claimed that the Italian wants to make the 29-year-old centre-back one of his first acquisitions at Spurs when the winter transfer window opens.

Both Conte and de Vrij are extremely familiar with each other having worked together at Inter Milan for two campaigns, in which they lifted the Serie A title last season.

The Netherlands international has at least another season on his contract with its expiry due in the summer of 2023.

However, former Arsenal striker Campbell is not convinced that Spurs need to draft in another centre-back and feels that is an already bloated area of the squad.

He did mention, though, that Spurs will end up pursuing a move for de Vrij if a transfer is at the request of new manager Conte.

Campbell told Football Insider: “Do they need another centre-half? They have got numbers back there.

“Conte will have his own mind of what he wants to do and how he wants to play. The key is signing players who are going to make this team better. They don’t need bodies.

“If De Vrij is the one Conte’s wants, Spurs will go and get him. Conte is very ruthless like that. I’m sure we’ll see him in a Spurs shirt soon.”

De Vrij seems like a suitable option for Conte as he was and is still being deployed in a back-three at Inter. In the early stages of his Spurs tenure, that seems to be the system he wants to use, so maybe he could sanction this move in January.
