In Focus: Erik Lamela

Tottenham were well beaten by an impressive Lionel Messi performance last night, and there is no shame in that so I wanted to keep this week’s In Focus positive.

Let’s take a closer look at Erik Lamela’s performance against the Spanish giants Barcelona.

With the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura all fit and firing, Erik Lamela is often restricted to the odd few minutes of game time here and there.

However, despite this hefty competition, Erik has been able to slowly claw his way back into first team contention over the past couple of months.

The Argentine midfielder has scored six goals in six games, an impressive return for a winger-come-playmaker.

His performances, even if below par, are always filled with sheer determination, willpower and 100% effort. You can say what you want about Lamela, there is no player on the team who puts more heart into a game.

Yesterday was no different. Lamela chased the Barca defence and won the ball high up the pitch from the first whistle to the minute he hobbled off the turf with cramp.

It isn’t surprising the man got cramp after all, he covered every single blade of grass out there, and managed to claim both a goal and an assist against perhaps the best team in the world.

Not only this, but he doesn’t shake his defensive duties, and is always happy to track back and get stuck in when needed.

He looks like a player who simply loves the game, and loves every moment in a Spurs shirt.

Long may his form continue.
