‘In my head, it was a boom’ – Spurs player opens up on leaving N17 this summer

Sergio Reguilon has revealed that he had no doubts about joining Atletico Madrid as soon as the La Liga giants showed interest in him.

It was clear from the start of the summer that Reguilon was not in Antonio Conte’s plans, with the left-back not training with the first-team squad at Spurs after returning for pre-season.

However, the 25-year-old only got his move away from the North London club right at the end of the transfer window.

In fact, with a week left in the window, it was even suggested that the Spaniard was prepared to stay at Spurs until January in order to make the right move (Gianluca Di Marzio).

However, Atletico then loaned Renan Lodi to Nottingham Forest, which allowed Diego Simeone’s side to sign the Spurs star on a season-long loan deal on August 31.

In his first interview as an Atletico player, Reguilon has revealed that he did not hesitate once Los Colchoneros showed interest in his services.

The left-back told AS: “My agent called me, he conveyed to me the interest of Atletico de Madrid, and in my head, it was a boom. I said directly: Yes, do your best to come here [take me there].

“There was interest from big clubs, that’s true, but as soon as I heard about the possibility of coming here, I said: please, do it as soon as possible. In fact, everything was done very quickly, everything was solved in 48 hours.

“For me, it was a moment of great happiness, I remember telling my parents, they were super excited, and for me, that has no price.

“Atletico are a top team. What excites me the most is the ambition to win. I am a professional and I have no doubts about the club that is Atletico. Both Berta and the coach gave me their confidence and everything was very simple.”

Both Reguilon and Winks seemingly rejected moves and waited till the end to see if a better offer would come along.

While the strategy seems to have worked for the Spaniard, with Atletico entering the picture, it seems to have backfired for the England man.

I am not sure a move to Sampdoria is what Winks would have had in mind at the start of the summer.
