Injured Spurs star named in preliminary squad by international boss

Cristian Romero, who has been ruled out of action for the rest of the season, has been included in Argentina’s preliminary squad to face Italy in two weeks.

Romero has been extremely solid since returning to action from his injury layoff a couple of months ago.

The Argentine’s performances at the back have been a key reason behind Tottenham’s upturn in form, with the 24-year-old having settled into life in the Premier League fairly quickly.

So, it came as a major blow to Spurs when Romero was not fit to make the matchday squad for the North London Derby on Thursday but Davinson Sanchez deputised very well for the former Atalanta man as the home side eased to a comfortable 3-0 victory.

After the game, Conte confirmed that Romero had suffered a hip injury in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool and that he will not be able to recover in time for the club’s upcoming clashes against Burnley and Norwich (Football.London).

However, Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni has named the centre-back in his preliminary squad to face Italy at Wembley on June 1st. Giovani Lo Celso, who is on loan at Villarreal, has also been called up to the squad.

The fact that Romero has been named in the Argentina squad suggests that his hip injury is not too serious. Even if he plays for Argentina against Italy and potentially aggravates his problem, he will still have the entire summer to recover ahead of pre-season.
