‘Injury expert’ claims Son could miss up to three more games despite return

Ben Dinnery has claimed Heung-min Son could miss a maximum of three more games for Tottenham as he continues to step up his recovery from injury.

Son has not featured for Spurs since picking up a hamstring problem in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg defeat to Chelsea at the start of January.

According to Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports, the South Korea international has returned to training and is in contention ahead of Saturday night’s FA Cup tie at home to Brighton.

However, Dinnery believes the clash against the Seagulls could come too early for Son and predicts the winger may return in one of the next two Premier League games if he doesn’t feature this weekend.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “My initial thoughts were that we were looking towards mid-February. The FA Cup provides a great opportunity for players to return. He won’t be too far away. It could be a late call. It’s that close.

“If he doesn’t make it, then the game after or the game after that would be realistic. He could miss three games but unlikely to be more.

“We know that Antonio Conte is a manager who doesn’t take any unnecessary risks. He’ll want to make sure he’s in tip-top condition. But he recovers quick. This is the longest time he’s spent on the sidelines with a soft tissue issue.

“He’s had a foot issue, a radius injury and an elbow issue that have kept him out before. But for him, this is new territory. Despite the number of games he plays, he doesn’t suffer too many severe muscle problems.

“The priority is going to be the run-in. If he misses a game or two, it isn’t going to be too major in the grand scheme of things.”

Spurs will be hoping Son, who has registered nine goals and five assists this season (Transfermarkt), gets back up to speed quickly ahead of a tricky run-in.

After two consecutive Premier League home games against Southampton and Wolves, Spurs will be on the road to face Manchester City, Burnley and Leeds.

Antonio Conte will be wary about Son coming back from injury and will likely manage his minuted carefully on his return. It may take him a bit of time to get fully back up to speed, so it is down to the rest of the forwards to keep putting in a shift while he does that.
