Inter Milan boss Conte demands improvement from Christian Eriksen

Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte has called for Christian Eriksen to improve in front of goal following his side’s 2-1 win over Sampdoria on Sunday.

Eriksen has not had made the start to his Inter career that he would have hoped for following his move from Tottenham in January.

The 28-year-old has come in for criticism following his move to the Serie A giants with Paolo Di Canio previously claiming that he will become a problem for Conte (Sky Sport Club show on Sky Italia on 8/3/20 as quoted by the Daily Mail).

The Danish international did get off to a better start following the resumption of football in Italy two weeks ago, when he scored directly from a corner kick in Inter Milan’s Copa Italia semi-final second leg match against Napoli.

However, the midfielder failed to convert any of his chances against Sampdoria on Sunday but the Nerazzurri did enough to get all three points to try and catch league leaders Juventus.

Conte insisted that the former Spurs star needs to be more clinical in front of goal.

As quoted by The Daily Mail, the Inter Milan boss said in the post-match press conference: “We had the chance to work with him (Eriksen). We had the time to improve from both physical and tactical point of view.

“Nowadays he fits our project but he needs to be more decisive because he had many chances to score and he must score.

“But I am pleased the way he played, as the team, because we are going to play again in three days and those three points will be decisive for us.”

I was not surprised with Eriksen’s initial struggles at Inter particularly given how poor he was for Spurs in his final year or so in North London. It is often not possible even for top players to just turn it on when they feel like it, as the likes of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez have also discovered.

However, having said that, I do expect Eriksen to eventually succeed at Inter as class is permanent. The 28-year-old will be a huge asset for Antonio Conte’s side once he has settled into his new surroundings.
