Inter Milan CEO ‘optimistic’ that Spurs-linked star will sign new contract

Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta has claimed he is optimistic that Milan Skriniar will sign a new contract with the Serie A club.

Skriniar’s current contract at the San Siro runs out next summer (Transfermarkt), and the centre-back has been mooted as a target for the likes of Tottenham (FCInterNews), Manchester City, Chelsea (The Sun), and Barcelona (Mundo Deportivo) over recent weeks.

There have been mixed reports regarding the 27-year-old’s future in the Italian press recently.

Gianluca Di Marzio said earlier this month that Inter will offer a salary of around €6m-€6.5m (£5.2m-£5.7m) per year to Skrinair and added that it remains to be seen whether the defender will accept the proposal (Sempre Inter).

Tuttosport subsequently revealed last week that talks between the Nerazzurri and the centre-back’s representatives have not been productive.

The report suggested that Simone Inzaghi’s men could sell the Slovak for a fee of around €20m-€25m (£17.3-£21.6m) in January if a new deal cannot be agreed upon before then.

However, Moratta has now remarked that he is confident Skriniar will commit his future to the club.

The Inter CEO said (via Fabrizio Romano): “We are optimistic and confident, but of course, it depends on Skriniar and his plans for the future. As Inter CEO, I have to be confident on this deal as always.”

I would not be surprised if the speculation over Skriniar’s future has been fed to the press by the centre-back’s representatives to improve their bargaining position regarding a new contract.

I suspect that the centre-back will put pen to paper on a new deal at the San Siro as he seems to be well-settled at Inter. If the Serie A club felt that he was not going to sign, they would have likely sold him in the summer.
