Inter Milan chief confirms club are in new contract talks with alleged Spurs target

In what comes as a potential blow to Tottenham’s rumoured pursuit of Hakan Calhanoglu, Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta has revealed that the Serie A side are in talks with the midfielder regarding a new contract.

Calhanoglu has been one of Inter’s most consistent performers since making a controversial switch from rivals, AC Milan, 18 months ago.

The versatile midfielder has scored three times and provided six assists so far in 2022-23 but his current deal at the San Siro only runs until the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt).

CalcioMercatoWeb.it suggested two weeks ago that Tottenham are eyeing Calhanoglu ahead of the summer transfer window, with Antonio Conte alleged to be keen on bringing the Turkish international to North London.

However, the report explained that the Nerazzurri were intent on tying down the 29-year-old to a new contract to ward off interest from Spurs.

Marotta has now confirmed that Inter are holding negotiations with Calhanoglu’s representatives regarding a new deal.

The Italian club’s chief said (via Fabrizio Romano): “We’re now working to extend the contract of Hakan Calhanoglu. We’re in talks with his agents, contacts will continue with him and more players”.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham will likely be much more concerned with Alessandro Bastoni’s future than Calhanoglu’s as the 23-year-old will likely be the club’s top target for the left centre-back role in the summer if he does not sign a new deal over the coming months.
