Roberto De Zerbi has explained why Mathys Tel was left out of the matchday squad for Tottenham’s 3–2 defeat to Aston Villa.
Spurs’ search for a first Premier League win in the 26/27 season continues after their latest 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The recent loss now leaves Tottenham firmly in the bottom three ahead of the long three‑week international break. 19th place could turn to 20th if Fulham get a result over Man United too.
However, the break could well be a blessing in disguise for Roberto De Zerbi, who will have more time with a few of his Spurs players.

One player De Zerbi has been critical of this season is Mathys Tel. The Tottenham boss made it clear earlier in the campaign that he needs the winger to improve his decision‑making in the final third.
Although Tel was involved against Liverpool in midweek, he missed out this time, not even making the bench.
The winger was spotted in the stands, and De Zerbi has now explained why. Speaking to football.london, he said: “Technical decision. He was in the stands, because I think during the game, Maddison and Kudus, they had more chances to change the game, and then two centre‑backs, important, also the two full‑backs, have a look for Pedro Porro, with Archie Gray, and the two central midfielders. But I explained why to Mathys yesterday.
“It was no problem. He was very nice and he understood the reason, but nothing more, and also he played more than the others.”
Spurs still lacking threat on the left wing
Spurs still have not improved on their left wing despite their near £400 million spending spree in the summer.
Omar Marmoush was moved to the left in the clash against Villa, and the versatile forward struggled to make an impact.
Savio was also moved onto the left, but again the end product was lacking on that side of the pitch. The right wing, however, looked much better, with Pedro Porro, Savio and Fernandes often linking up well.
