‘It has been hard’ – Emerson Royal explains why he has improved at Spurs

Emerson Royal has admitted that while things were quite hard for him at times at Tottenham, he never stopped working on his game and trying to get better.

It seemed like Emerson had no way back at Spurs when he was jeered off by the home fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during the clash against Leeds back in November (Football.London).

However, the 23-year-old has undoubtedly been Tottenham’s most improved player since the Premier League’s restart.

His performances in February against the likes of Manchester City, West Ham United and Chelsea even saw him being nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award.

The Brazilian has now insisted that he never stopped doing the things that brought him to Tottenham in the first place.

He told the club’s official website: “I’ve always worked hard on my game throughout my time here. I know that, at times, it has been hard, it has been difficult, but I never lost focus on my football.

“I always tried to do what I always did to get here in the first place.

“Now, thanks to God, better things are coming my way and that has been the case in recent matches.”

The right wing-back remarked that he is still the same player he was last year, with the only difference being that he is a lot more confident when he is out on the pitch.

He added: “I think that you can see when a player is confident, it shows on the pitch. Things come easier and work better.

“And I have always been myself; the same player.

“Some people say that ‘it’s a different Emerson’ but, the truth is, I’ve always been the same player, the same Emerson – the one who played for the Brazil national team, Real Betis and Barcelona.

“Now I find myself in the team, playing well and I hope that it continues for a long time.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It takes tremendous character to come through what Emerson did at Spurs and to never lose self-belief.

It is a testament to the Brazilian’s mental strength and perhaps sheds light on why Conte and his coaching staff continued to show faith in the 23-year-old.
