“It is in our hands” – Poch on how important the Brighton win was in top four race

Tottenham edged past Brighton at the new stadium last evening, thus continuing their perfect record at their new 62,062-capacity stadium.

The three points puts Tottenham in a commanding position in the race for Champions League qualification.

Tottenham now sit on 70 points, 4 points above Arsenal in 5th spot, and six above Manchester United in 6th. With Spurs arguably having the easier fixtures when compared to the other teams, it now looks like a place in the top 4 is Tottenham’s to lose.

When asked how their late win would have affected their rivals, Pochettino insisted that Tottenham were only thinking about their results and not paying attention to what the other teams around them do.

Speaking to Football.London, the Argentine said, “For us the most important thing is to see ourselves and not think about our opponent. We are in a position now that is in our hands to be in the top four.

“If we are capable of winning the next three games in the Premier League then we will be third. I think that is the key, thinking about ourselves and then seeing what’s happening next to us of course. That is going to be tough for us.”

While the 47-year-old insisted that the team was focussed on winning all their remaining matches, he said he expects a closely contested game when West Ham travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a local derby next Saturday.

He added, “Saturday is going to be really, really tough against West Ham. It’s going to be a derby, it’s so important the three points for us. It happens what happens in other stadiums or our opponents playing. The most important thing is we must be focused on ourselves.”
