‘It is no secret’ – Brentford’s director of football on Christian Eriksen’s contract situation

Brentford have confirmed they will meet with Christian Eriksen and his agent to look to keep him at the club and continue discussions over a fresh contract.

The Danish international Eriksen returned to professional football for the first time since he suffered a cardiac arrest during his nation’s Euro 2020 opener and joined Brentford at the end of the January transfer window following his release from Inter Milan.

Eriksen had a significant impact on the Bees fortunes since coming into Thomas Frank’s side, having helped them to a respectable thirteenth place finish in their maiden Premier League campaign.

The 30-year-old is now out of contract at the Brentford Community Stadium and admitted in an interview with the BBC last week that he does not know what his future holds but did admit he wants to play at the highest level and win trophies.

A return to Tottenham has been mentioned in the media with Football Insider previously suggesting that he is on their summer transfer wishlist.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte, who worked with Eriksen at Inter admitted in February that it would be a good opportunity for the Dane to return to north London (Sky Sports).

In a statement on their official club website, Phil Giles, Brentford Director of Football said: “Finally, it is no secret that we would love Christian to remain at Brentford for more seasons, and we will continue to discuss that possibility with him and his representatives.”

Given the wealth of experience that Eriksen has, coupled with his availability as a free agent it would make his return to Tottenham a no-brainer.

Spurs are desperate to bring in a creative midfielder who can unlock a defence with one pass, rather than having to rely on Harry Kane to drop deep to orchestrate matters. Hopefully the lure of Champions League football, remaining in London and a reunion with Conte will be enough to make up his mind.
