‘It might be an isolated incident’ – Former Spur left surprised by recent claim

Kieran Trippier completed his departure from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month when he joined Atletico Madrid in a £20million deal (Telegraph).

The right-back certainly had a season to forget in North London last season after making a number of high profile errors during important matches which led to goals being conceded against Arsenal in the Premier League, Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final and Ajax during the Champions League semi-final second leg.

Trippier claimed earlier this week that ‘things happened behind the scenes’ at Tottenham which saw him leave for La Liga (Sky Sports).

Former Spurs striker Darren Bent has admitted that he was left surprised by the right-back’s revelation.

Bent spoke of his experience of playing for the North London side and insisted that he had not encountered any similar instance during his time at the club.

He told Football Insider: “It’s quite a strange comment,”

“I’ve not been there for a long time but when I was there behind-the-scenes everything was brilliant. I couldn’t say one issue behind-the-scenes things weren’t working out well but obviously everyone’s situations are different.

“If Kieran Trippier’s saying that things are going on behind-the-scenes, he’ll know better than I do, but these things don’t happen at Spurs. It would have been a tough question, if you’d have said: ‘Do you want to stay or do you want to go?’ if he was on the same money and everything.

“It might be an isolated incident. At other clubs, you look at Manchester United and the whole Pogba thing, Chelsea there’s one or two issues with player – at Spurs, not a lot comes out, it’s quite a tight-knit group.”

Opinion

Trippier’s parting shot was uncalled for and something which Mauricio Pochettino is unlikely to lose any sleep over.

The former Burnley player was the master of his own downfall at Spurs with his poor performances last season proved that he is not reliable to be a regular at a top four English side.
