The Tottenham man came under some criticism for his display, with Sport.TV2 giving him a rating of just 3/10 and suggesting that the 28-year-old was quite sloppy throughout the game.

The midfielder was involved in a funny incident during the game as he shoved the referee to the ground on the edge of his own box in order to get to the ball.

Hojbjerg has now explained that he had no choice but to push the referee aside in order to regain possession and stop Switzerland’s counter-attack.

The midfielder told Tipsbladet about the incident: “It wasn’t malicious, but the ball is mine. They counter-attacked and I tried to get back quickly. It was man or ball, but he finished the game, so I don’t think anything bad happened.”

The Spurs star revealed that the official also saw the funny side of the incident after the full-time whistle.

When asked what the referee made of it, he said: “We talked a bit after the game and laughed a bit about it, so it was fine.”

In fairness to Hojbjerg, the official completely messed up by running towards the ball and blocking his path, leaving the midfielder with little choice but to push him aside.
