‘It was very different’ – Hugo Lloris on working under Antonio Conte at Spurs

Hugo Lloris has spoken about the impact that Ange Postecoglou has had since taking over Tottenham from Antonio Conte, admitting that the Australian has brought back the feelgood factor at Hotspur Way.

Although some of Spurs’ recent displays have perhaps taken the sheen of the season, it is fair to say that Postecoglou has had a transformational effect on the mood of Tottenham supporters.

The club were reeling when he walked through the door last summer, with Daniel Levy and co coming under a lot of flak after yet another managerial appointment blew up in their faces.

However, Postecoglou has managed to get the supporters back onside, partly owing to the attacking football that he has delivered, which is something Tottenham fans had been devoid of for the last few years.

Lloris admitted that the club had made some missteps and had to current course last summer, which he feels they successfully have.

When asked about Postecoglou’s impact, the former Tottenham captain told The Athletic: “With the change of managers (after Mauricio Pochettino left in 2019), the club also changed the way of playing football.

“The fans were not happy with the way we used to play, but by bringing in Ange, we can see there is a real positive impact. Not only because of the results but also because the fans are enjoying the way the team plays — it’s what the fans demand. It’s an attractive football with risk, aggression and dominant possession.

“When you look at how the squad has changed in three years, it’s very different. Tottenham are now young with legs and personality. Everybody enjoys watching Tottenham, and the credit belongs to Ange.”

Tottenham was different under Antonio Conte, says Lloris

It is now almost a year since Conte’s infamous rant against the Tottenham players, with the Italian accusing the players of being selfish and not being able to handle pressure, in what proved to be his final press conference as Spurs boss (ESPN).

When asked why Conte could not achieve success at N17, Lloris responded: “I don’t like to compare the managers because there are different visions, approaches and management types. The only thing I can say is that it was very different.

“But we talk about big names and managers that used to win — he is successful. But his management style is very different.”

Lloris is someone who is always going to be diplomatic. He certainly is not going to criticise the methods of any of the managers he has worked with.

However, the ‘very different’ comment is quite telling from someone who has worked with a whole host of top coaches at the club and international level.

We know that Conte’s man-management techniques are not everyone’s cup of tea, with the Italian falling out with players in almost every single job he has had so far.
