“It would be a kick in the teeth” – Paul Robinson on Spurs star potentially joining Man City

Paul Robinson has insisted losing that losing veteran defender Jan Vertonghen to Premier League rivals Manchester City would be a kick in the teeth for his former club.

Robinson admitted he was shocked to see the reports stating Spurs will allow their experienced Belgian leave (Express) with City mentioned as his potential next destination (Telegraph).

He told Football Insider: “It would be a kick in the teeth but I could not see that happening,”

“He is a top class defender and has been for man years but I cannot see Manchester City signing Vertonghen given the age he is at now. They would be signing him as a stop-gap and then they would have to look again next season.

“I would be shocked if that move happened.”

However, the former England number-one claimed he could not picture City pursuing the 33-year-old given his age, despite their defensive issues.

Vertonghen has emerged as a potential target for the Citizens this summer with the Belgian expected to leave on a free transfer this month, according to The Telegraph.

If the centre back is to depart this summer, it would end his eight-year spell with the Lilywhites after joining in 2012 from Ajax for £11million (transfermarkt).

However, Vertonghen has struggled for game time this season since the arrival of Jose Mourinho and has only started just half of his 30 total appearances this season (transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

It would be strange to see ‘Super Jan’ leave on a free transfer and actually leave for a side who are going to challenge for the Premier League title next season. Do I see it happening? I think it would be unlikely but stranger things have certainly happened.
