‘It would be good for him’ – Pundit backs £25m man to leave Spurs on loan in January

Alan Hutton has backed Ryan Sessegnon to leave Tottenham on loan in January so he can focus on improving himself ahead of the rest of his career.

Sessegnon, 21, has struggled to make an impact at the club since moving to North London in 2019 in a deal worth £25 million.

He has played just two games in all competitions for Tottenham this season with both coming in the Europa Conference League, after which he picked up a knock on international duty with the England U21 side.

Sessegnon had been linked with a move to Turkish outfit Fenerbahce, with the report alleging the club’s manager, Vitor Pereira, is a fan of the youngster.

Former Spurs defender Hutton believes such a move would be a positive one for Sessegnon going forward in his career, as it would allow him to establish his preferred position, which is still a major quandary for him.

He told Football Insider: “I think he’s a brilliant player. I played against him, I know what he’s all about. He’s still very young so he’ll still be learning.

“I think his one problem is I’m not so sure what his best position is. Is he a left-winger, a left-back? Is he more a midfielder or higher up?

“I think that’s the main problem that he has. I did think he would get more game time. There have been injuries there, there’s maybe a confidence problem.

“I would want to move out somewhere on loan. He can have a future at Tottenham but it’s a matter of going out and finding out about himself. Where is his best position?

“Playing for a club regularly to come back a better player and then really try and focus on getting into that Tottenham team. I think it would be good for him to go out on loan.”

Sessegnon’s injury problems have certainly hampered him, but the fact that we don’t know his best position hasn’t helped either. His previous loan move was a successful one, so maybe another wouldn’t harm anyone as he is still very young.
